Wallpaper Application Guide
How to Install Wallpaper: Step-by-Step Instructions
Visible seams in wallpaper are a common issue and, in most cases, can be prevented.
ALDECO’s wall covering was specifically designed to prevent distortions such as expansion or contraction. Unlike traditional wallpapers, which may expand when wet and shrink as they dry, this non-woven wallpaper remains dimensionally stable thanks to the combination of synthetic and natural fibers in its composition.
However, the interaction between the adhesive, the wall surface, the paint, and the surface preparation can significantly affect the final result and the appearance of visible seams.
This guide explains how to install ALDECO wallpaper correctly.
Steps to avoid visible seams in wallpaper:
- Apply a primer in a shade similar to the wallpaper or use the banding technique;
- Apply the paste evenly and generously;
- For dark wallpapers or solid dark backgrounds, pre-tint the edges of the rolls with a matching colour;
- Apply the correct amount of pressure during installation and smoothing, using a seam roller if necessary;
- Immediately remove any excess paste from the seams with a soft cloth;
- Allow the wallpaper to dry naturally for 48 hours in a well-ventilated space.
Wall preparation
Proper wall preparation is key to achieving better wallpaper results and reducing the appearance of visible seams. Applying a primer improves adhesive performance by sealing the wall surface so the paste isn’t absorbed too quickly, which would weaken its grip. It also creates a more suitable surface that enhances overall adhesion.
However, a high gloss paint finish on the wall can make the surface more slippery, preventing the wallpaper from adhering properly. In these cases, a matte or eggshell finish is recommended to ensure better adhesion.
Wallpaper smoothing
Smoothing the wall covering is essential for proper installation. It ensures the right amount of pressure is applied to improve adhesion and remove excess paste from the edges. Once the wallpaper is hung, the surface should be firmly pressed to reinforce bonding during drying.
For best results, a seam roller should be used along the edges of each panel to enhance grip and ensure a secure finish.
Avoiding stretching
ALDECO wallpaper panels are designed to join seamlessly without overlapping. For this reason, once installed, avoid pressing or stretching the edges to close any gaps. The best way to adjust positioning is to push the wallpaper from the centre so the entire panel can slide into place.
If needed, carefully lift the paper and reposition it correctly.
Temperature and drying conditions
Temperature variations can affect wallpaper drying, especially when exposed directly to heat or cold sources such as air conditioning, heaters, or strong sunlight. For this reason, it is recommended to allow natural drying and avoid direct exposure to heating or cooling devices during the first 48 hours after installation.
Reducing seams with wall colour
A simple way to reduce visible seams is to match the wall colour to the wallpaper, using a similar-toned primer or base coat to help conceal minor imperfections. Seams can also be camouflaged by pre-painting vertical bands where the joints will fall.
For darker wallpapers, the light backing of the material can sometimes show at the edges, creating the appearance of misaligned seams. This can be minimised by using water-based markers or pencils in a matching tone to colour the edges before installation. Any excess should be removed afterwards with a damp microfiber cloth.
Following these steps will help ensure a smooth and professional installation, improving adhesion and overall finish while significantly reducing the appearance of visible seams.
